What is a trademark?
A trademark is a word, name or symbol used on goods to indicate the source or origin of the product and to distinguish them from the goods of others. Some of the more common types of trademarks are brand names and logos which help distinguish a company’s products from its competitors’. Advertising slogans and Certification marks can also be trademarked to strengthen a companies reputation.
Why should I get a trademark?
Registering your trademark protects your product and brand by publicly claiming your trademark. Specifically, this prevents others from legally using your mark or potentially conflicting similar marks on their products. Once your trademark has been secured, you can prevent competitors from using the same or similar marks and anyone violating your rights can be taken to court to prevent further use and award damages for the infringement. Another reason to register your trademark is it gives you the ability to license your trademarks to other businesses and receive a licensing fee making it an asset that adds value to your business portfolio.
